In this article, we’ll show you some ways to tell if your shower drain is stopped up.

The expert advice of Cowboy Plumbers & Drain Cleaning will also share some tips to help you save money.

How To Tell If Your Shower Drain Is Clogged

If you’re wondering if your shower drain is stopped up, there are several ways to tell for sure. Here are some techniques you can apply to see how your drain is performing.

  • Turn on the faucet and let it run for a minute.
  • If the water doesn’t drain, see if you hear a sucking sound or a noise that indicates that the water is at least slowly moving through the pipe.
  • If you don’t hear the drain working and the water visibly seems to be stagnant, it’s time to fix the problem.

Decide if you want to use a chemical solvent or an object to unclog your drain. Here are your options:

Use a Plunger

If you have a plunger, forcefully jam it over the top of the drain, pressing it until it compressing. After a second or two, forcefully pull it off the drain in hopes that the pressure dislodges any impediment in the drain. Try this a few times to see if it works.

Plungers are available for less than $7 at most stores that sell household items. You should always keep your plunger clean to avoid putting it in a drain and sink and clogging it.

Use Some Liquid Drainer

Many chemical products can be poured down a drain in order to break up the sludge that has accumulated in the drain. This option should be used sparingly and only if you read the directions on the bottle.

Be especially careful with handling chemical drainers as many of them are to be touched only with gloves on.This article has been provided to you as a community plumbing resource.
